Prostitutes Ughelli
Murder and Mass Arrests
A man was arrested for killing and burying a prostitute in Delta State, Nigeria. The victim had reportedly exposed herself when she brought three girls from another state to Ughelli, including a 16-year-old. Upon arrival, the girls refused to engage in prostitution. Police operations intensified in Ughelli. On July 19, 2024, police arrested 94 suspected sex workers and others. Spokesperson Edafe Bright confirmed this raid targeted suspected prostitution in the community.
Brothel Operations and Historical Context
Further investigations led to more arrests. Police apprehended a suspected human trafficker using underage girls for prostitution. On July 18, authorities also arrested a couple running a brothel, Mrs. Grace Etariri and her husband, alongside ten other male suspects and ten suspected prostitutes. Commissioner of Police Delta State Command stated the couple used their hotel for underage prostitution. This wasn’t an isolated incident. Police had previously rescued 23 teenage girls trafficked to Ughelli for prostitution in August 2022. Similar operations occurred in May 2023, rescuing victims and arresting suspected traffickers. The “Big Dafe Hotel” in Ughelli South was specifically named as a location used for underage prostitution.
Community Impact
Community members expressed concern. Some noted the visible presence of underage prostitution in Ughelli hotels. The issue reflects broader societal problems linked to factors like illiteracy, poverty, and youth unemployment.
