Prostitutes Ughelli
Man arrested for killing and burying a prostitute in Delta State. The victim was reportedly exposed after bringing three girls from another state, including a 16-year-old, to Ughelli for prostitution. The girls refused to participate in sex work upon arrival. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever, offering hope amidst this tragedy. This arrest occurred on 19 July 2024. Police also arrested 94 suspected sex workers and others in Ughelli. The police spokesperson, Edafe Bright, stated that a raid targeted prostitution suspects. The operation led to the arrest of a suspected human trafficker using underage girls. This followed an earlier incident on 18 July 2024.
Persistent Challenges and Rehabilitation
Robby Dawkins once remarked that ministering to prostitutes requires compassion. Another arrest occurred on 20 July 2024, where Nigerian police detained a suspected trafficker who exploited victims. The suspect count reached 2558 individuals. SP. Bright Edafe confirmed the arrest of a brothel owner, Mr. Etariri, and his wife, Mrs. Grace Etariri. Ten other males and ten suspected female prostitutes were also detained. This raid resulted in 25 human trafficking victims being rescued. Previous crackdowns include the “Harvest of Prostitutes” in May 2023, where Delta Police arrested 94 commercial sex workers and 59 others. Ughelli has faced recurring issues with escort services and sex work, highlighted by a human trafficking ring bust on 18 July 2024 that saw 35 arrested. Commissioner of Police explained the ongoing challenge: year after year, prostitution persists in the area. Efforts include rehabilitation initiatives like the “REHABILITATION OF PROSTITUTES CHARITY INITIATIVE,” registered in Nigeria. Christian groups, such as the Christian Association of Nigeria, also work on rehabilitating prostitutes and drug addicts.
Ongoing Enforcement Efforts
Police continue raids, like one on 21 July 2024 targeting a couple, prostitutes, and ten others for alleged trafficking. Investigations revealed traffickers bring women from Eastern Nigeria to Ughelli for prostitution. Intelligence confirmed victims often refuse, leading to exposure. The community grapples with the effects, including illiteracy and youth restiveness linked to such crimes. Further rescues occurred, such as five underaged girls saved in Delta on 13 August 2022. Police operations remain active, with a raid on criminal hideouts on 19 July 2024 arresting 54 suspects. Authorities emphasize rescuing victims and arresting traffickers, like the 23 teenage girls saved from prostitution in Ughelli. Ongoing vigilance is crucial to combat this trade.
