The Origins of Sexmoan

Sasmuan, a town in Pampanga, Philippines, has an interesting history behind its name. Originally known as Sexmoan during the Spanish colonial period, the name actually comes from the Kapampangan word sasmuan, meaning “meeting place”. This name was unrelated to any English connotations involving sex or moaning, as English wasn’t widely spoken there at the time.

Cultural Depictions

Later, the town became the subject of a semi-documentary short film titled “SEXMOAN ADVENTURES”, described as a Kapampangan documentary. The film starred Diego Dobles and Arn Lagazo.

Rebranding to Sasmuan

Over time, the spelling and pronunciation of the town’s name evolved. It was officially changed from Sexmoan to Sasmuan. This change reflected the original Kapampangan root word more accurately and moved away from the unintended modern English interpretation of the former spelling.
