Saint Nicholas is known as the patron saint of prostitutes. This connection explains why people find presents under the tree on Christmas morning. It’s not just a story about prostitution.
Legal Framework in San Nicolas
Prostitution is a government-regulated business in Aruba. Before COVID, around 10 designated bars in San Nicolas housed this activity. It’s legal only in San Nicolaas. The area functions as a red-light district.
We meet many prostitutes in San Nicholas through our project. They are almost never addicted. Sharing the gospel with them is part of our work.
Organizations, some started by sex workers themselves, try to help them with problems. The whole profession faces challenges.
Operations and Enforcement
An undercover operation occurred. Coastguard personnel removed prostitutes from San Nicolas on Monday night. Prostitution remains legal there, but specific activities prompted the action.
Broader Context and Incidents
Concerning incidents happen elsewhere. Three people were sentenced in an Eden teen prostitution ring. Police explained undercover tactics used in Eden Prairie. A youth pastor and teacher were among 46 arrested in a North Texas sting.
Perspectives vary widely. One view suggests it’s not sex workers’ job to “cure incels”. Another details drug use, sex, and payments involving Matt Gaetz. Historical accounts note soldiers seeking prostitutes, promoting prostitution in places like Le Havre.
Survivor Chong Kim discussed sex trafficking related to the movie “Eden”. The film, based on true events, portrays trafficking. It won a SXSW Audience Award.
