Nigerian secret police busted a sex cartel operating in Calabar. They conducted raids and made numerous arrests. This included apprehending the owner of a location known as “Papsi Place.” The raids specifically targeted brothels and hotels used by commercial sex workers. Authorities arrested 59 individuals, many reported to be teenage girls between the ages of 13 and 15. In another operation, police arrested 54 prostitutes and 58 alleged pimps.

The issue extends beyond law enforcement. Cameroonian sex workers are noted to operate in Calabar, partly due to economic pressures. Concerns exist about HIV/AIDS transmission and condom use within this population. Some initiatives, like the “WISE UP Calabar Carnival Campaign,” promote safe sex practices with messages like No Condom? No Sex. A disturbing cultural stereotype persists, suggesting Calabar women are exceptionally sexually active or skilled. This harmful generalization is often repeated but lacks credible basis. It contributes to stigmatization.

Brothels operate at specific locations, such as “Flour Mill Brothel” and addresses like 6 Bassey Eteta Ita Street. Sex work remains a visible, albeit illegal, part of the local economy with significant social and health implications.
