Prostitutes Badagry: Enforcement and Incidents

Prostitutes Badagry

Recent Law Enforcement Actions

Court dismisses Abuja sex workers’ lawsuit against Wike, ending their challenge to recent enforcement actions targeting prostitution in the capital. Comptroller of the Badagry Local Government, Hunpe-Adande Babatunde Bankole, reported a significant drop in stowaway attempts and prostitution along the waterways. Prostitution on Lagos waterways is now described as history by the NIS after successful enforcement operations.

Social Stigma and Local Incidents

Ambiguity in Nigerian law leads many to mistakenly assume prostitution is entirely illegal, treating sex workers harshly despite unclear legal status. This stigma persists, as seen when ignorant people label Nollywood actors as prostitutes or Yahoo boys. Incidents involving sex workers often make headlines, such as a prostitute causing a scene in Badagry after a client reneged on payment, shouting I can’t walk properly! or a mother tragically selling her 2-year-old daughter to a prostitute for N50,000 in Badagry. Areas like FESTAC Town are sometimes disparagingly called towns ruled by prostitutes.

Trafficking and Rehabilitation Efforts

Nigerian girls are frequently trafficked for this purpose; immigration officials recently foiled an attempt to smuggle seven Nigerian girls, likely destined for prostitution overseas. Law enforcement continues operations, with Lagos courts jailing six women for prostitution and police rescuing ten teenage girls from trafficking rings. Despite the risks and stigma, demand exists, with many men in Badagry actively seeking paid sexual encounters weekly. Efforts like establishing rehabilitation centers in Lagos, including one planned for Badagry, aim to address the root causes and offer alternatives.
