Prostitutes Salmon Creek
Historical Context of Brothels
Brothels have existed in various locations. Creek Street in Ketchikan, Alaska, was historically known for its brothels. Loggers, miners, and fishermen frequented these establishments after work. Prostitution was legal there until the mid-20th century. People sometimes say men and salmon both went upstream to spawn on Creek Street.
Ketchikan Creek is also a significant salmon spawning area. Salmon migrate there from late June through September. This area was built around the creek.
Brothels were sometimes run by women. During prohibition, some reportedly used the spaces under brothels to run illegal alcohol.
Violence and Investigations
Violence against sex workers has occurred. In March 1988, the body of a 27-year-old prostitute was found in Salmon Creek. Another body was found there later that year. Arthur Shawcross was linked to murders of prostitutes. Robert Pickton, a Canadian pig farmer, admitted to killing numerous sex workers.
Police investigations sometimes involve missing sex workers. Unsolved homicides and missing persons cases exist in areas like Humboldt County. In Salmon Arm, British Columbia, warnings were issued to sex workers to avoid certain areas. Curtis Sagmoen was jailed for attacks on sex trade workers. A neighbor noted a sex worker was seen at his property.
Legal and Social Dimensions
Legal actions continue. Dominique Terrel Gonzales pleaded guilty to sex trafficking a minor in October. A Nova Scotia man faced charges for historical sex offenses. Twelve people were arrested in a Milwaukie prostitution bust.
Other locations have connections. Donald Trump’s grandfather reportedly ran a Canadian brothel. Sean Combs faced prostitution charges. Hazel Dell, Washington, had reports of prostitution and drug deals near Salmon Creek Park.
Terminology varies. Words like “prostitute,” “sex worker,” “escort,” and “hooker” appear. “Hookers” was also used in a decal name for a fishing shop on the Salmon River.
Community concerns persist. Salmon Arm council heard that “no community is immune to child” exploitation. Systemic mistrust can hinder investigations into crimes against sex workers.
