Safety Challenges and Societal Issues
Safety and social issues are present. On August 25th, clashes erupted in Kassala over a political appointment, resulting in one death and 17 injuries. International Support and Health Programs
International organizations are active. UNICEF opened the first Women and Girls’ Centre in Kassala State, providing a safe haven and integrated services. UN Women secured funding (8,118,170 króna) to support about 280 disabled women refugees in Kassala. Practical Action empowered rural women through a solar lighting project in ten villages. Health initiatives are underway. Training programs teach women modern animal feeding and fodder conservation methods. A UNFPA clinic in Elkarama 2 camp offered reproductive health and protection services from January to July 2025. Studies focus on health issues affecting women, including obstetric fistula, FGM/C prevalence and abandonment efforts, severe anaemia risks, urinary tract infections among pregnant women, and cytomegalovirus seroprevalence.
Education and Livelihood Development
Education is also a focus. The ‘Al Mustaqbal Girls School’ serves children from refugee camps in Kassala. Photos show girls receiving school meals there. Support exists for disabled women on the move. Efforts continue to improve women’s lives. Projects aim to enhance livelihoods through microfinance for refugee women and boost agricultural production in conflict-affected areas. Evaluations assess the impact of programs like the Out-of-School Girls Education Project (OPEG) in Kassala and White Nile states.
