Prostitutes Koh Kong: History, Risks and Reality

Prostitutes Koh Kong

Koh Kong, Cambodia, near the Thai border at Cham Yeam, has a history tied to smuggling and prostitution. Once isolated, its economy relied heavily on these activities. Brothels became common. Women, including young Vietnamese girls, worked in these brothels. Reports, like one from Koh Kong Hospital in 1997, documented hundreds of prostitutes there. Many were based in brothels. Prices were low – sometimes just $2 for a short time with teenagers around Phnom Penh, $10-$20 in Koh Kong.

Health Risks and Trafficking Networks

This environment created significant risks. Sex workers faced violence and high exposure to HIV. Surveys highlighted these dangers. The illegal nature of prostitution in Cambodia forced it underground, increasing vulnerability. Trafficking was a major concern. Women and girls were brought across borders, including into Hong Kong and Koh Kong itself, for the sex industry. Demand for virgins reportedly fueled this trafficking into Cambodian brothels.

Enforcement Challenges and Social Stigma

Authorities sometimes conducted police sweeps, raiding places like the Bunny Bar in Phnom Penh, often targeting underage workers. Women were sometimes sent to centers like Prey Speu. Despite these efforts, the trade persisted. Social stigma was harsh. Society often viewed sex workers as “disreputable” and “dangerous.” One woman noted, Most people don’t like sex workers. Hotel staff even openly offering services was seen as disgraceful by some visitors.

Persistent Trade in Border Economy

Alongside smuggling wildlife and gambling, prostitution remained a feature of Koh Kong. Sex workers continued to operate, caught between law enforcement actions and social condemnation, while facing serious health risks like HIV.
