Prostitutes Ejigbo
Reports from Ejigbo, Lagos, paint a concerning picture. Traffickers exploit the allure of Abidjan, tricking young women from Ejigbo and other areas into prostitution abroad. This dangerous trade involves brokers who deceive victims with false promises.
Violence and Fatal Incidents
In a tragic incident, a man named Davy died during an intense sex competition with a commercial sex worker at a brothel in Ejigbo. Violence against sex workers is also reported, including a case where a man allegedly beat a worker to death because he wasn’t satisfied during their encounter.
Brothel Hostility and Arrests
Disturbingly, outreach efforts face hostility. An evangelist named Mathew was beaten into a coma by a group of prostitutes after he entered their Ejigbo brothel preaching repentance. This attack highlights the tense environment. Authorities are responding; Nigerian officials uncovered a human trafficking ring operating in the area, arresting suspects like a driver nabbed for trafficking girls to Côte d’Ivoire. NAPTIP (National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons) has also arrested suspected transborder traffickers in Osun, connected to Ejigbo routes.
Brothel Operations and Persistence
The local sex trade is visible, with commercial workers noted around venues like New Romeo and Juliet club. Economic pressures are evident, with some workers reportedly selling items like singlets and perfumes to supplement income. Brothels operate openly, with descriptions of places like Graceland Brothel and De Love Hotel, where transactions sometimes turn deadly or violent. Residents have raised concerns, asking for additional security following incidents. The Ejigbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) secretariat has become an unintended refuge for displaced workers. Despite crackdowns including demolition of notorious areas like Agbole and police arrests, underlying issues driving the trade persist.
